Outlook Search Tools Greyed Out

The problems I had were that the Microsoft Outlook icon was missing. I used the Control Panel/Program Features to repair the Microsoft Office installation. The icon appeared and I checked and unchecked it, but search options still did not appear.I then read something about the AppData directory being excluded because it needs to find the.ost file. Under Search Tools (in search tab), I went to Search Options/Indexing Options and noticed that under the Exclude, the AppData was there. I don't thinkthis was the problem because my other systems also have this.I checked to make sure that the window search services was running as this was a Windows Server 2008 installation which does not install this by default. Finally, I read that you need to turn on the 'Use cache exchange mode' which isn't easy to find.

Click on File/Info/Account Setttings icon/Account Settings (again)/Change (tiny icon in the middle)/Use Cached Exchange Mode)Once I did that and restarted outlook, it gave me a blank screen for my inbox and it had some indications that it was indexing and my search options appeared. It began downloading my inbox and it appears I can search now.So it seems you have to turn on cache exchange mode in order for search to work.

Who was the person who thought of doing that since there is no apparent reason why that should be the case and why isn't there a clear message indicating why the search optionsaren't active? With such an obvious setting, why wasn't that advised as the first solution?

I profiled Outlook 2010 (on a Windows 7 (64bit) computer) to stream-to-client to Windows 7 (64bit) computers, and all seemed to be working as expected. But today someone noted that they can't get the Search indexing to work, nor can they get the People Pane to update either. In having a look at the Outlook 2010 settings (File Options Search) on users computers, the 'Change how items are searched with Instant Search' is not selectable, and the 'Indexing Options' button is greyed out. Under Add-Ins, the 'Windows Search Email Indexer' shows up under 'Disabled Application Add-ins'.I've confirmed that when Outlook was profiled on the Windows 7 (64bit) computer, that indexing (Windows Search) was checked off and running on that computer. On the computers that are now running the stream-to-client Outlook 2010, the Windows Search is also checked off and running.

I also checked in the registry and made sure the registry entry for 'PreventIndexingOutlook' was either turned off, or was not there at all.Users are requesting to use the People Pane option of Outlook 2010, or advanced (indexed) searches, but I can't get it to work. (People Pane shows an error 'Search cannot return results for this view').Has anyone had success with getting Indexing/Searching and the People Pane to work in Outlook 2010 where it is streamed?
